The enzymatic degradation of microbial exopolysaccharides is less studied than plant cell wall polysaccharides, but detailed understanding could be relevant for the development of new therapeutics. Two types of pure microbial glucans were here used as the sole carbon source to isolate species able to metabolize them, and the genomes of six strains sequenced to gain insight into their carbohydrate-active enzyme repertoires to identify enzymes likely to be involved in the process.
