Environment-related Literacies: Curriculum Opportunities and Challenges in Indonesian Public High Schools

This study explored how environment-related literacies (ErLs) are understood, embedded, and enacted in Indonesian high schools in the face of local to global sustainability challenges. ErLs is an umbrella term addressing ecological literacy, environmental literacy and sustainability literacy. The study used a scoping review of literature, a survey of Indonesian experts and case studies of public schools to generate data on ErLs, applying thematic analysis informed by a Communities of Practice lens to work through abstract to concrete aspects. Key findings suggest ErLs in Global South contexts are better understood through an alternative framework that infuses spiritual and place-based dimensions.
