Leeches constitute a monophyletic group of highly specialized annelids which are widely distributed in lakes, rivers, and other wetland environments worldwide. Some leeches have a long history of application in the development of human medicine in both the West and the East. For example, Hirudo nipponia is a classic medicine in China and is used for promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis ever since the Eastern Han Dynasty two thousand years ago. Despite of the pharmaceutical significances of leeches, genomic data are very scarce in the public database. Here we provide the next generation sequencing data (clean reads) of the genome of Hirudo nipponia.

水蛭（Leeches）为一类高度特化的单系环节动物类群，广泛分布于全球各地的湖泊、河流及其他湿地环境中。部分水蛭在东西方人类医学发展进程中均拥有悠久的应用历史。例如，日本医蛭（Hirudo nipponia）作为中国传统经典药材，自两千年前的东汉时期起便用于活血化瘀。尽管水蛭具有重要的药用价值，但公共数据库中公开的水蛭基因组数据却极为稀缺。本研究提供了日本医蛭（Hirudo nipponia）基因组的下一代测序（next generation sequencing）数据（清洁读段，clean reads）。
