Torso of an Athlete of the 'Westmacott Ephebe' Type

Acquired around 1830 in Rome by C. K. J. BunsenMarble, Roman, after original around 420 BC The torso depicts a naked, athletic young man in the classical contrapposto scheme, with left, weight-bearing or engaged leg and right free leg. The head was turned to the right, the right arm raised. The lost Greek original is thought to be a late work by Polykleitos of Argos or his school and is named after the best copy in the British Museum. This object is part of Scan The World.
