This is a GIS of Kua, Pwani, Tanzania. GIS (Geographic Information System) is a digital toolset used to map, analyze, and visualize spatial data related to a site, enabling the documentation, preservation, and interpretation of archaeological features and historical environments. The information in this site description is provided for contextual purposes only and should not be regarded as a primary source.
Kua are the remains of a Swahili settlement featuring coral stone architecture, including mosques, tombs, and domestic structures. The site reflects Islamic influence in building techniques and urban planning, with evidence of trade connections across the Indian Ocean. Artifacts such as ceramics and glassware indicate commercial activity and cultural exchange. Kua contributes to understanding Swahili coastal society, religious practices, and maritime networks.
The Zamani Project seeks to increase awareness and knowledge of tangible cultural heritage in Africa and internationally by creating metrically accurate digital representations of historical sites. Digital spatial data of cultural heritage sites can be used for research and education, for restoration and conservation, and as a record for future generations. The Zamani Project operates as a non-profit organisation within the University of Cape Town. All work was carried out as part of the Kua Conservation Project:
Co-Directors: Stephane Pradines (ISMC-AKU) and Pierre Blanchard (WMF).
Partner institutions: Aga Khan University (AKU); Tanzanian Antiquities; World Monument Fund (WMF), Zamani Project (University of Cape Town)The Zamani Project contributed accurate 3D models and maps of the site and structures to the Kua Conservation Program.Special thanks to the Saville Foundation, and the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations - Aga Khan University London, among others, for their contributions to the digital documentation of this heritage site.If you believe any information in this description is incorrect, please contact the repository administrators.
