BACKGROUND In exploring the expression of collective national identity through distinct and now-popular iconography, Hulbert's photographic series Import/Export draws on a tradition of local and international artistic engagment with issues of nationalism and identity and the wider connection between place, history and culture. CONTRIBUTION Photographs from the Import/Export series celebrate the icons and myths that help define Australian identity. Featuring a combination of locations, personalities and 'larrikin' humour, the photographs consider ways in which foreign locations, such as China, encapsulate the idea of Australia (export). The series also acknowledges the contribution of international cultures to the ongoing development of Australia, by higlighting the assimilation of imported cultural icons (import) (Melbourne Now exhibition guide, NGV, 2013, p. 150). SIGNIFICANCE Five photographs from Hulbert's Import/Export series (2011-2013) were selected by the senior curator of photography at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), and confirmed by the galleries curatorial team, to be shown as part of the Melbourne Now exhibition. Melbourne Now is described by the NGV as an 'ambitious and far-reaching exhibition', held across The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia and NGV International, which 'celebrated the latest art, architecture, design, performance and cultural practice to reflect the complex cultural landscape of creative Melbourne'. Hulbert's Import/Export is referenced in two printed publications from the NGV and through their online publications, including an e-book, app and website (http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/melbournenow).
