Infectious factors in the prenatal period can have a negative impact on the formation of the fetal brain and skull. In particular, infections belonging to the TORCH group of infections disrupt the morphogenesis of the central nervous system, leading to cranial anomalies and neuroanatomical changes. Under the influence of prenatal infection, the processes of proliferation and migration of neurons are disrupted, which increases the risk of developing cognitive and behavioral disorders. For example, congenital cytomegalovirus infection and congenital toxoplasmosis are common causes of central nervous system damage.
