Marilyn Schwartz: Catalog of Works and Images

Photographer and visual artist, Marilyn Schwartz, is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her photographs were often produced in series; The Halloween Series, explored children in costume creating their own fantasies…this led to the Fantasy Series, where she spoke with the people involved to bring their fantasies to light, they became actors choosing much of what appeared in the photographs. In contrast was the New York Trap Rock Series noted for its architectural feeling and rich prints of the buildings and decay along the waterfront, now a beautiful park.

In 1978 Schwartz was selected as a staff photographer for the Cultural Council Foundation CETA Artist Project (1978-1981), a Federally sponsored project. The project was helpful to burgeoning artists because it not only gave the artist two days a week to do their own work but also a paycheck. She produced a series of portraits of artists living at Westbeth Artist’s Residence. Later stationed out in Staten Island, she photographed many buildings of historical significance for the New York Landmarks Commission, The U.S, Coast Guard Station, Richmondtown, Sailor’s Snug Harbor as well as a traveling dance company and photographic assistance to the Staten Island Children’s Museum.

Schwartz became involved in the women’s movement she participated in picketing MOMA for greater representation of women artists, while taking photographs of the demonstrating artists. She has also been on the scene during peace marches, women’s rights, black rights and more recently a colorful celebration of Gardens and Earth Day in the East Village, NYC. She has written poetry since a teen and sees close connections between her poetry and her photography .

Her photographs were published in New York Magazine, Prentice Hall, Houghton Mifflin, Forbes Magazine, Staten Island Architectural History, Jazz Magazine (Fr.), and others. Schwartz has been on assignment and published by MS Magazine and been exhibited at Aud Art Gallery, The Staten Island Museum, Westbeth Gallery, The Staten Island Children’s Museum, Gallery 84, Bucher and Harpsichords, Donnell Library, Newhouse Gallery at Snug Harbor, S.I., the Stedeljik Museum in Amsterdam and Museo Del Arte De Ponce, Ponce, Puerto Rico, Soho Arts Festival, and others.

In 2012, photographs by Schwartz of the New York Art Quartet (Jazz), Call it Art from 1964-1965 were published by Triple Point records in a boxed limited-edition release. Photographs were also used in 2013 by Alan Roth at Asymmetric Pictures for his documentary, the Breath Courses Through Us, a jazz film.

The photographs of Marilyn Schwartz are in the collection of the Museum of the City of New York, the Staten Island Museum, The New York Historical Society and the Museum of Modern Art archives.

施瓦茨投身女性运动期间，曾参与抗议纽约现代艺术博物馆（Museum of Modern Art, MOMA）的游行，呼吁提升女性艺术家的作品展出占比，并记录了参与游行的艺术家们的身影。她也曾出现在和平游行、女权运动、黑人民权运动的现场，而近年则记录了纽约东村举办的花园与地球日多彩庆典。她自幼便开始创作诗歌，并认为诗歌创作与摄影之间存在紧密的内在关联。

她的摄影作品曾刊载于《纽约杂志》（New York Magazine）、普伦蒂斯·霍尔出版社（Prentice Hall）、霍顿·米夫林出版社（Houghton Mifflin）、《福布斯杂志》（Forbes Magazine）、《斯塔滕岛建筑史》（Staten Island Architectural History）、《法国爵士杂志》（Jazz Magazine (Fr.)）等媒体与出版物。施瓦茨还曾受《MS杂志》（MS Magazine）委托进行拍摄并获发表，其作品的展览场地包括奥德艺术画廊（Aud Art Gallery）、斯塔滕岛博物馆、韦斯特贝斯画廊、斯塔滕岛儿童博物馆、84号画廊、布赫尔与哈普西科德画廊（Bucher and Harpsichords）、多纳尔图书馆、锡安港纽豪斯画廊（Newhouse Gallery at Snug Harbor, S.I.）、阿姆斯特丹斯特德尔吉克博物馆（Stedeljik Museum in Amsterdam）、波多黎各庞塞市庞塞艺术博物馆（Museo Del Arte De Ponce, Ponce, Puerto Rico）、苏荷艺术艺术节（Soho Arts Festival）等。

2012年，施瓦茨拍摄的1964至1965年间的纽约艺术四重奏（New York Art Quartet）爵士主题摄影作品集《称之为艺术》（Call it Art from 1964-1965）由三重点唱片公司（Triple Point records）以限量盒装形式发行出版。2013年，艾伦·罗斯（Alan Roth）在其执导的爵士纪录片《呼吸流转》（the Breath Courses Through Us）中使用了她的摄影作品。

玛丽莲·施瓦茨的摄影作品被纽约市博物馆、斯塔滕岛博物馆、纽约历史学会以及纽约现代艺术博物馆档案库纳入馆藏。
