Cholera is a highly contagious disease caused by Vibrio cholerae, which endangers human health, causes economic losses, and overwhelms public health services. Although the impacts of Vibrio cholerae on human health have been extensively studied, information regarding how Vibrio cholerae acquires and transmits cholera toxin genes across different environments remains limited. In this work, we investigated the transfer of cholera toxin genes among viruses from distinct habitats by collecting viral and bacterial genomes carrying cholera toxin genes from the IMG/VR, RefSeq, and Enterobase databases. We retrieved Vibrio cholerae genomes and bacterial genomes carrying toxin genes from the RefSeq, EnteroBase databases, and bacterial MAGs from multiple habitats (over 1,165,144 bacterial genomes in total), identifying a total of 4,625 Vibrio cholerae genomes and 6,947 bacterial genomes carrying toxin genes. A total of 453 medium-to-high quality UViGs encoding toxin genes were identified in the Integrated Microbial Genomes and Virome (IMG/VR) database (v4.1, September 2022).
