<P>Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.</P><br><p>The purpose of this study was to compare the attitudes of students remaining in a hall of residence after one year and those leaving (of their own free will) for other accommodation. The data cover university life and study, cultural activities, moral, political and religious differences and attitudes to authority. A subsidiary purpose of the survey was to note differences (if any) between the first, second and third years at university.</p><p><span style="background-color: rgb(245, 245, 245);">Users should analyse these data with caution, due to their age.</span>
</p><br><B>Main Topics</B>:<BR><br><p> Attitudinal/Behavioural Questions:</p><ul><li>Grades obtained in last year's examinations. Positions of formal responsibility held in hall or university societies, sport played regularly, whether active in any University society (type). Whether application for residence in hall made in first year, number of full years resident in hall, reasons for choice to live in hall.</li><li>Students living out of hall: type of accommodation; number of other students sharing; whether moved out of hall this year (reasons); reasons for choice of present residence.</li><li>Opinion about most important purposes of a higher education, opinion on various statements about life at university, informal contact with members of university staff, whether students should observe the conventions and moral standards of society as a whole, person respondent would turn to for advice on personal problems other than work. </li><li>Political and religious beliefs, daily/Sunday newspapers read, activities and interests.</li><li>Parental influence, closeness to family, discussion of important personal decisions with family.<br>
</li></ul><p>Background Variables:</p><ul><li>
Age, sex, year at university, nationality, faculty. Whether secondary school was co-educational, experience of boarding during secondary school education, length of time between leaving school and entering university, positions of formal responsibility held in sixth form.</li></ul>
