We propose to observe the core region of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy with the Parkes Ultra-Wideband Low (UWL) receiver and the goal is to search for new millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Recent studies of diffused gamma-ray emission in the Galactic Bulge strongly indicate that Sgr dSph might also be shining at high energies. The summed gamma-ray emission from a population of millisecond pulsars is the most promising alternative explanation. The discovery of MSPs in Sgr dSph will allow us to study pulsar formation and evolution in various environments, probe the evolutionary history of the galaxy and interstellar medium in the Milky Way's halo, and constrain the potential contributions from dark matter annihilation to the observed gamma-ray emission.

本研究拟采用帕克斯超宽带低频段(Parkes Ultra-Wideband Low, UWL)接收机,对人马座矮椭球星系(Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal, Sgr dSph)的核心区域开展观测,目标为搜寻新的毫秒脉冲星(millisecond pulsars, MSPs)。此前针对银河核球弥散伽马射线辐射的多项研究表明,人马座矮椭球星系可能同样存在高能辐射。由毫秒脉冲星星族产生的叠加伽马射线辐射,是该高能辐射最具说服力的替代性解释。若在人马座矮椭球星系中发现毫秒脉冲星,将有助于我们研究不同环境下的脉冲星形成与演化过程,探究银河系银晕中该星系的演化历史与星际介质特性,并限制暗物质湮灭对观测到的伽马射线辐射的潜在贡献。
