Utopian Vectors Corpus of English Utopian Literature

A dataset of "eutopian" (utopian/dystopian) literature, including full texts for works published before 1929. The dataset texts are a subset of the works listed in Utopian Literature in English: An Annotated Bibliography From 1516 to the Present by Lyman Tower Sargent. The dataset includes 3 files: metadata.csv: Includes metadata for the 797 works for which we collected full texts. Most of the metadata columns are derived from the Lyman Tower Sargent bibliography. We cleaned up these columsn for readability (for example, to remove LaTeX code and html tags that were present in some values) but did not otherwise change the values. The columns derived from the Lyman Tower Sargent bibliography are: ID, title, author, keywords, abstract, address, publisher, year, howpublished, editor, pages, isbn, volume, issn, doi, url. We added 4 columns that are defined in codebook.csv. codebook.csv: Includes definitions of the tags that we added manually to each text, describing whether the eutopia is positive (utopia) or negative (dystopia); the planetary location of the action; the religion of the society depicted; and whether the main audience of the book is young adults/children. utopian_vectors_full_texts_pre_1929.zip: Many of the texts that we collected remain under copyright, so we cannot publicly release them. This zip file contains the full texts of works published up to and including 1929 that are now out of copyright. The file name for each text corresponds to the ID in the metadata spreadsheet. It .txt, .pdf, and .epub files. Many of the early works are scans of PDFs that will require OCR prior to further analysis. These are indicated by _scanned in the file name; for example, 606_scanned.pdf contains the full text of the work with ID 606 in the metadata. The full texts of works under copyright are archived at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15282664. The data is restricted. Anyone wishing to work with or develop this dataset may contact us to request access to it. Content note: The dataset contains works with racist, misogynist, and other harmful & discriminatory views. Lyman Tower Sargent's notes, contained in the abstract field of the metadata spreadsheet, indicate when this is the case, either explicitly or through genre labels such as ``lost world".
