We have compiled a dataset for a systematic review on the effect of environmental enrichment (EE) on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) activity in animal models of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This dataset allows for a comprehensive analysis of EE's impact on BDNF expression and related behavioral outcomes, focusing on variability across experimental conditions and study designs. The dataset includes articles identified through systematic searches in multiple databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science), organized across key stages of the review process: - Keywords and Search Strategies: This document includes all search terms and Boolean operators used across databases to ensure transparency and reproducibility. - All retrieved articles: A complete list of studies identified using pre-defined search strategies. - Articles after removing duplicates: A refined dataset excluding duplicate records. Retained articles after Title and Abstract screening: Results of title and abstract screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. - Excluded studies after Full-text screening and reasons for exclusion. The results revealed variability in the effects of EE on BDNF activity and behavioral outcomes. Factors such as the type of ASD model, EE protocols, sex of the animals, and brain regions examined significantly influenced the observed outcomes. Increased BDNF expression emerged as a key mechanism underlying EE’s impact on ASD-associated behaviors.
