Ben Johnston: String Quartet No. 3 / "Verging", sketch material: 60 twelve-tone rows

By using enharmonic alterations and by doubling the diatonic root notes, Johnston achieves a total of 60 twelve-tone rows. He designates these as P (= prime), I (= inversion), R (= retrograde) and RI (= retrograde inversion). In order to exclude doublings, Johnston rearranges the rows in a final step and thus obtains the plan for a potentially quite long piece.
