In 2007, 298,182 new passenger cars were registered in Austria, of which 59% diesel and 41°% petrol. The average CO2 emissions are 164°g/km (diesel) and 161°g/km (petrol). Compared to the previous year, the average emissions of all vehicles decreased slightly, but are higher than in 2004 and 2005. In general, the trend towards more powerful vehicles continues. Newly registered diesel cars had an average engine power of 17°kW higher than petrol cars in 2007. The CO2 monitoring is carried out annually and reported to the European Commission. This review examines the commitment of European, Korean and Japanese car manufacturers' associations to reduce specific CO2 emissions to 140 g/km by 2008/2009 using technical means.
