Dataset/Supplementary material: Mapping the Historical Ecology of the Cyclades: A Diachronic Natural Language Processing Analysis of Travel Narratives (1700 - 1920)

This is the open access dataset for the paper "Mapping the Historical Ecology of the Cyclades: A Diachronic Natural Language Processing Analysis of Travel Narratives (1700 - 1920)" that was presented at the 2nd Workshop on Ecology, Environment, and Natural Language Processing (NLP4Ecology2026), which was co-located with the Fifteenth biennial Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC 2026), in Palau de Congressos de Palma, Palma, Mallorca (Spain), in 12/05/2026. The dataset includes: the 4 text files (Text A_A voyage into the Levant.txt, Text B_Observations upon the Peloponnesus and Greek islands.txt, Text C_Cyclades_life among insular Greeks.txt, Text D_A handbook of Greece_Compiled by the Geographical Section of the Naval.txt) that were used for the analysis, which are parts of the text of the following historic narratives: A voyage into the Levant (Tournefort, 1717); Observations Upon the Peloponnesus and Greek Islands (Andrson, 1830); The Cyclades, or; Life among the insular Greeks (Bent, 1885) and A Handbook of Greece (Naval Intelligence Division, Naval Staff, Admiralty, 1919) the keyword lexicon used for the analysis, (Keywords_list.xlsx) the list of places, which was automatically extracted and was "cleaned" by the authors (Places_list_Cyclades_cleaned.xlsx), the results of the two pipelines (keyword and semantic) described in the paper (Keyword_Pipeline_Places_Result.xlsx, Semantic_Pipeline_Results.xlsx) and the figures presented in the paper in high resolution (Thematic_Evolution.png, Keyowrds_Places_Result.png, Island_Mapping_categories.png). The raw text data was harvested from the HathiTrust Digital Library (https://www.hathitrust.org).
