Diversity of planktonic n-alkane degrading marine microbial communities in seawater samples of Menai Straits (Wales, UK)

To investigate the potential of the native marine communities from Menai Straits to grow on long-chain n-alkanes as the sole carbon and energy source we set up enrichments with n-octadecane using the surface seawater samples of Menai Straits as an inoculum with varying concentrations of nitrogen source and elevated salinity. Changes in the composition and diversity of bacterial communities in the enrichments were examined by SSU rRNA gene amplicon sequencing using the Illumina MiSeq platform.

为探究梅奈海峡（Menai Straits）原生海洋群落以长链正构烷烃（long-chain n-alkanes）作为唯一碳源与能源进行生长的潜力，本研究以梅奈海峡表层海水样本作为接种物，设置不同浓度氮源与升高盐度的培养条件，以正十八烷（n-octadecane）为唯一底物开展富集培养。随后采用基于Illumina MiSeq平台的SSU rRNA基因扩增子测序（SSU rRNA gene amplicon sequencing）技术，对富集培养体系中细菌群落的组成与多样性变化进行分析。
