The Bisti sites are located in northwestern New Mexico
near the town of El Huerfano. Site elevations range around 5900
feet above sea level. The surrounding predominant plant
community is open grassland with a few scattered juniper.
Associated plants include: four-wing saltbush (Atriplex canescens),
wolfberry (Lycium sp.), snakeweed (Gutierrezia sp.), yucca
(Yucca sp.), and various grasses. The area has been heavily
overgrazed. The distributions of snakeweed, yucca, and probably
juniper reflect this factor. Pollen samples were studied from
two sites, 25606 and 25621. These sites are about one-half
mile apart, and modern floristic attributes are very similar.
The nearest water source is De-na-zin Wash, an intermittent
stream less than one mile south of the sites.
