Carved Nimba Mask at The British Museum, London

This is a carved mask (nimba) carved out of wood with metal decoration originating from the Baga people in Guinea and created in the 20th century. Nimba masks are associated with the simo society and are carried around the fields and showered with rice to increase fertility. They are so heavy that relays of dancers are required and the greatest benefits to the community are helfd to derive from a mask that falls to pieces from old age and use. This object is part of Scan The World.
