Bacteroides species are frequently linked to uterine diseases in dairy cows, particularly metritis a postpartum uterine infection characterized by microbial dysbiosis, fever, and foul-smelling uterine discharge. Metritis can progress to endometritis and infertility later in the postpartum period. This condition is associated with disruption of the uterine microbiome, marked by the proliferation of Gram-negative anaerobes such as Fusobacterium necrophorum, Bacteroides pyogenes, and Porphyromonas levii. Despite their frequent co-occurrence, the mechanisms enabling these opportunistic pathogens to proliferate together and contribute to disease remain poorly understood. In this study, we examined the interactions among these uterine pathogens with respect to bacterial growth, survival, and virulence.
