Abstract
---------------------------

IPUMS-International is an effort to inventory, preserve, harmonize, and disseminate census microdata from around the world. The project has collected the world's largest archive of publicly available census samples. The data are coded and documented consistently across countries and over time to facillitate comparative research. IPUMS-International makes these data available to qualified researchers free of charge through a web dissemination system.

The IPUMS project is a collaboration of the Minnesota Population Center, National Statistical Offices, and international data archives. Major funding is provided by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Demographic and Behavioral Sciences Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Additional support is provided by the University of Minnesota Office of the Vice President for Research, the Minnesota Population Center, and Sun Microsystems.

UNIT DESCRIPTIONS:
- Dwellings: Any place or premises structurally separate or independent, that has been built, made, or converted for use as permanent or temporary housing or lodging of persons or also any class of lodging, fixed or mobile, occupied by persons as a living quarters on the date of the census.
- Households: All of the occupants of a private dwelling. The household can consist of a person who lives alone or a group of persons that includes the Head of household, the relatives of this person, boarders, tenants, domestic servants, and any other occupant. When the number of boarders and/or tenants is 6 or more, it constitutes a ?non-family group?.

Universe

All persons, whether members of the family or not, who slept in the dwelling the night of the 10th to 11th of December. All persons who live in the dwelling, even if they have not slept there, if they spent the night away from the dwelling because of work, dance, a wake, hunting, fishing, or any other incidental reason.
