Restriction of inland waterway transport

Navigation is generally permitted on public waters in Switzerland. This principle is enshrined in the Federal Act on Inland Navigation (BSG). At the same time, the waters relating to shipping are subject to the cantons, and they may restrict or completely prohibit shipping for important reasons. Restrictions are usually signalled on site using shipping signs set by the Federal Government.
