The Hambledon Hill project archive results from a programme of excavation, accompanied by field survey in the surrounding area, and from subsequent analysis, the final stage of which culminated in the publication in 2008 of Hambledon Hill, Dorset, England. Excavation and Survey of a Neolithic Monument Complex and its Surrounding Landscape by Roger Mercer and Frances Healy. The programme of excavation was carried out from 1974 to 1982, and focused on a hilltop complex on the Dorset chalkland which includes two Neolithic long barrows, two Neolithic causewayed enclosures with related outworks, and an Iron Age hillfort. This collection consists primarily of images, database tables, spreadsheets, and text documents compiled in the course of post-excavation analysis, both of the stratigraphic record and of collections of artefacts, human remains, animal bone and environmental material. It also includes listings of the primary archive and miscellaneous documents. Hambledon Hill was the site of an exceptionally large and diverse complex of earlier Neolithic earthworks, including two causewayed enclosures, two long barrows and several outworks, some of them defensive. The abundant cultural material preserved in its ditches and pits provides information about numerous aspects of contemporary society, among them conflict, feasting, the treatment of the human corpse, exchange, stock management and cereal cultivation. The distinct depositional signatures of various parts of the complex reflect their diverse use. The scale and manner of individual episodes of construction hint at the levels of organisation and co-ordination obtaining in contemporary society.
Excavation and Survey of a Neolithic Monument Complex and its Surrounding Landscape)。
