<i>Chromobacterium violaceum</i> is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacterium with a versatile metabolism. Commonly found in soil, the rod-shaped bacterium also synthesizes a natural violet coloured antibiotic known as violacein. But, what is perhaps most interesting of this bacterium is its ability to synthesize hydrogen cyanide from glycine. This naturally opens up biotechnological application potential such as the use of hydrogen cyanide for leaching gold from metal ores or from electronic scrap material. This work provides a gene database of <i>C. violaceum</i> ATCC 12472 through parsing its annotated genome sequence from Genbank. Comprising gene name, gene function description and gene sequence, the database should find use in a variety of biotechnology and fundamental biology studies seeking to understand the mechanistic basis of various cellular processes pertinent to this bacterium for opening up future biotechnological potential.
