This project was an integral part of the large international effort to drill the new NEEM Greenland ice core. Our long-term goals were to study the abundance, viability and diversity of the intrinsic microbial populations at different depths (100 to 2051 m)/ages (300 to 80,000 years) along the NEEM Greenland ice core and to address the question of possible microbial origin of anomalies of nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations in Greenland ice due to in-situ microbial activity. We used high-resolution geochemical and microbiological analyses including cultivation and Illumina next generation sequencing.

本项目是格陵兰岛NEEM冰芯钻探大型国际协作计划的核心组成部分。本研究的长期目标为:沿格陵兰NEEM冰芯,对不同深度(100至2051米)及对应年代(300至80000年)的固有微生物种群的丰度、存活能力与多样性展开研究,并解答因原位微生物活动导致格陵兰冰芯中一氧化二氮(nitrous oxide, N₂O)浓度异常的潜在微生物成因这一科学问题。本研究采用高分辨率地球化学与微生物学分析手段,涵盖微生物培养实验与Illumina下一代测序技术。
