Arctic charr are important salmonid fish in Holarctic fresh-water ecosystems and fisheries. In the short time frame since the last ice age (ca 15,000 yrs) they have colonized a wide variety of aquatic habitats (lakes, streams, rivers and the sea) and vary by life-history type (anadromous vs. lacustrine). They are noted for very high phenotypic and genetic variability which can make species taxonomy and conservation efforts problematic. Even with recent scientific studies, resolving the role of charr diversity is difficult as altering ecosystems are changing faster than diversity can be documented. Originally submitted as Salvelinus alpinus IW2-2015.

北极红点鲑（Arctic charr）是全北界淡水生态系统与渔业中的重要鲑科鱼类。自末次冰期（约15000年）以来的短暂时间尺度内，它们不仅拓殖了多样的水生栖息地（涵盖湖泊、溪流、河流与海洋），还演化出两种核心生活史类型：溯河洄游型与湖栖型。该类群以极高的表型与遗传变异水平著称，这给物种分类学研究与保护工作均带来了诸多挑战。即便依托近年的科学研究，厘清北极红点鲑多样性的生态功能仍颇具难度——正在变化的生态系统的演化速度，远超其多样性被系统记录的速率。该类群最初被提交为Salvelinus alpinus IW2-2015。
