Becausefuturedevelopmentsinnanomanufacturingarelikelytobeaffectedbyglobaleconomicdynamicsandbycontinuingadvancesinscienceandtechnology,aswellasbyshiftsinpolicydirections,theobjectivesofthisreportaretosummarizeforumdiscussionsinthefollowingareas:•Thefutureofnanomanufacturing,asviewedbyforumparticipants:Anticipateddevelopmentsconcernedthefutureeconomicimportanceandsocietalimpactofnanomanufacturing—forexample,nanomanufacturing’sprospectsfor(1)achievingacorecapacitythatcansetthepaceforimprovementsacrossawiderangeofindustrysectors(whichcouldresultinawidearrayofpotentialsocietalbenefits),and(2)bringing“disruptiveinnovation”and,potentially,anetgaininjobs.•U.S.investmentsinnanotechnologyR&DandcurrentchallengestoU.S.competitivenessinnanomanufacturing:Presentationsanddiscussionscovered(1)informationonthisnation’spublicandprivateinvestmentsinnanotechnologyR&Dcomparedtoothernations’investmentsand(2)thechallengestoglobalcompetitivenessthatournationfaces,includingquestionsabout,forexample,theadequacyofcapitaltotakeU.S.innovationsfromthelaboratorytocommercialproductionandchallengesfromothernationsthatarenowinvestingheavilyinthisarea,aswellasissuesinintellectualpropertyprotection.•WaystoenhanceU.S.competitiveness:Approachesdiscussedrangedfrom(1)enhancingU.S.competitivenessininnovationacrosstheeconomyto(2)fieldingprogramssupportingadvancedmanufacturingintheUnitedStatesand(3)developingaU.S.strategyforreachingavisionfornanomanufacturing.•Issuesinaddressingtheenvironmental,health,andsafetyimplicationsofnanomanufacturing:IncludedherewerediscussionsconcerningEHSimpactsofnanotechnologyandapproachesformanagingrisksrelatedtothoseimpacts,whichmaydifferfromthoseassociatedwithotherkindsofproducts.
