Shown are mitotic Muntiacus muntjac chromosomes immunostained to detect Topoisomerase IIα (green) at the axial core and histone H3 isoforms phosphorylated at Serine 28 (H3S28p; red). H3S28p localizes peripheral to Topo IIα and is largely excluded from the chromosome axial core. These localization patterns correlate with in vitro evidence that phosphorylation of Serine 28 inhibits binding of Topoisomerase IIα to histone H3.
