Date: 1957-10-11. Reporter: Donoghue. Assignment: Feeding at zoo. Special instructions: Monday feature. 13: Bert Smith, chef at the Griffith Park zoo, weighing 'lion's share' of horsemeat for king of jungle's lunch. Lions and tigers get between 14 and 15 pounds of meat a day, per animal. 14: Bert Smith, chef at the Griffith Park zoo, cutting filets [sic] of horsemeat for the smaller carnivora. Meat eaters at zoo consume more than 4100 pounds of meat a week. 17: Chimps at Griffith park zoo offer a challenge to head chef Bert Smith shown here as he cooks up animal-land version of a mulligan stew for the playful apes. 15/16: Bert Smith prepares fruit salad consisting of bananas, cantaloupe, grapes, raisins, apples, oranges, lettuce etc. for apes, etc. 18/22: Head chef Bert Smith looks while Acting Head Keeper Van Yrineo feeds cantaloupe to 'Dewline,' 8-month polar bear at Griffith Park zoo. 'Dewline,' a fish and meat eater, developed taste for melon from neighbor, 'Boots,' a melon-eating mountain lioness. 19/20: Acting Head Keeper Van Yrineo feeds cantaloupe to Boots, five year old mountain lioness at Griffith Park zoo. Usually the big cats eat nothing but meat, so the fact of a mountain lion (same family as panther, cougar, etc) eating melon for dessert is a rarity. Head Chef Bert Smith looks on".; Caption slip continues: "Photographer: Olmo....23/24: Chimps (Sally on bottom, Gus tp) are careless about table manners as Keeper Roger Bearanchi feeds them a choice fresh fruit plate of grapes, bananas, apple, melon and apples. 27/28: Keeper George Ray feeds carrots to Joyce, 6, and Bojo, 5, elephant 'sister act' at Griffith Park zoo. They also get hay, grain, fruit and bread. The pair beg like puppies for dainties. 29/30: Keeper Bob Burt bottle nurses month-old Nilgai (Indian antelope) fawn at Griffith Park Zoo. The baby, nicknamed Kip (short for Kipling), takes quart of goat's milk each nursing".
