Straight or slightly curved bacilli, not spiral-shaped. Many species can accumulate poly-β-hydroxybutyrate as a storage material. Without stalks or sheaths. Do not produce endospores. Gram-negative, motile by single polar flagellum or several polar flagella; non-motile strains are rare. Some species also possess short lateral flagella. Aerobic, with obligate respiratory metabolism, using oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor. In certain cases, anaerobic respiration is conducted using nitrate as an alternative electron acceptor.
