Valley Metro Light Rail
Valley Metro light rail serves the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa, while the streetcar serves downtown Tempe. Construction of the light rail began in March 2005 and operations started in December 2008. Construction of the Tempe Streetcar began in 2017, with operations beginning in May, 2022. The Light Rail Trains (LRT) operate on city streets mostly using a "center reservation" system, whereas some areas of the system have no contact with other traffic. The LRTs have a maximum speed of 58 mph, but usually operate at a much slower speed due to traffic interfaces and stopping for boardings and alightings. The Tempe Streetcar serves 14 stops along 3 miles of track in downtown Tempe and along the edge of the Arizona State University (ASU) Downtown campus. Both systems are powered by an overhead catenary electric system. Historically, the Phoenix Street Railway, founded by Moses Sherman, provided streetcar service from 1887 to 1948. Mr. Sherman is most notably remembered for creation of the Los Angeles Railway and Pacific Electric Railway in Los Angeles, CA, as well as development in West Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, and Hollywood, CA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_Metro_Rail and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempe_Streetcar and https://www.valleymetro.org/maps-schedules/rail
