The study focuses on the emergence of antibiotic resistance in the environment, particularly lake water. Stenotrophomonas sepilia, isolate SMBL8 is isolated from a lake water sample. It is a multidrug-resistant pathogenic strain with strong biofilm-forming ability. Stenotrophomonas sepilia is a species of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia complex (Smc), and it is increasingly emerging as an opportunistic multidrug-resistant species. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is silently rising as a superbug within the genus of Stenotrophomonas. Therefore, it is crucial to pay increased attention to all of the species within the Smc complex, not only in clinical settings or clinical strains but also in the environmental settings, to understand the dissemination and emergence of resistant species to better combat antibiotic resistance as well as tailoring strategies for effective treatment related to Smc infections.
