This quantitative online survey samples high school biology teachers in Maryland (n=74) to evaluate their personal experience with genetic counselors, as well as the impact that experience has on genetics instruction and the inclusion of genetic counseling in lesson plans. Results suggest that personal experience with a genetic counselor may impact the frequency that the field is discussed outside of a genetic counseling setting. Specifically, it had a significant effect on if a teacher discusses genetic counseling as a potential career with students during the genetics unit (p=0.047), if a teacher would suggest genetic counseling to a student as a potential career (p=0.03), if a teacher has mentioned genetic counseling as a potential career to a student before (p=0.019) and if a teacher would feel comfortable explaining the career of genetic counseling to a student (p=0.001).
