The euryhaline black-chinned tilapia (Sarotherodon melanotheron) exploits a wide salinity range in Western Africa (Senegal, Gambia), with some populations living in fresh water, brackish and seawater habitats but also hypersaline habitats in, e.g., the inverse Saloum estuary. In the upper reaches of the Saloum, salinity can be three times that of sea water during the dry season. This salinity gradient has its origin in the Sahelian droughts of the 1960s and 1970s and the species had to adapt hypersalinity during this period. RADseq data from six populations sampled in 2006 are provided in order to investigate the genetic population structure of this species along the whole salinity gradient and to detect SNPs that might be associated with salinity variation.
