This dataset provides the version of the Cloud_cci AVHRR-PMv3 monthly gridded dataset in the Obs4MIPs format. The Cloud_cci AVHRR-PMv3 dataset, covering the period from 1982 to 2016, was generated under the Cloud_cci project, which is funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) and is part of the ESA Climate Change Initiative (CCI) program (contract number: 4000109870/13/I-NB).

This dataset is based on inter-calibrated measurements from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensors aboard the NOAA Gold Afternoon (PM) satellites NOAA-7, -9, 11, -14, -16, -18, and -19. It contains a multi-year global dataset of cloud and radiation characteristics derived using the Community Cloud Climate Retrieval (CC4CL) retrieval framework.

This specific Obs4MIPs product was developed for inclusion in Obs4MIPs (Observations for Model Intercomparison Project), an initiative to make observational products more accessible for climate model intercomparison.

The provided standalone files cover seven cloud variables:
- Atmospheric cloud area fraction (clCCI);
- Atmospheric cloud ice content (clivi);
