Annotated record of the detailed examination of Mn nodules recovered from the VA 04 expedition (R/V Valdivia) in the Pacific Ocean

From 1983 until 1989 NOAA-NCEI compiled the NOAA-MMS Marine Minerals Geochemical Database from journal articles, technical reports and unpublished sources from other institutions. At the time it was the most extended data compilation on ferromanganese deposits world wide. Initially published in a proprietary format incompatible with present day standards it was jointly decided by AWI and NOAA to transcribe this legacy data into PANGAEA. This transfer is augmented by a careful checking of the original sources when available and the encoding of ancillary information (sample description, method of analysis...) not present in the NOAA-MMS database.

1983年至1989年间，美国国家海洋和大气管理局国家环境信息中心（NOAA-NCEI）从期刊论文、技术报告及其他机构的未公开资料中，汇编生成了NOAA-MMS海洋矿物地球化学数据库。彼时，该数据库是全球范围内涵盖范围最广的铁锰矿床数据汇编集。该数据库最初以专有格式发布，无法兼容现行标准。为此，阿尔弗雷德·魏格纳研究所（AWI）与美国国家海洋和大气管理局（NOAA）共同决定，将这批遗留数据转录至PANGAEA。本次数据迁移工作还通过两项举措得到了扩充：在可获取原始资料的情况下对其进行细致校核，并对NOAA-MMS数据库未收录的辅助信息（如样品描述、分析方法等）进行编码处理。
