Archaeological Survey of the Replacement of the US 176 Bridge Over the Broad River

"In May 2005, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an archaeological survey of the proposed Replacement of the US 176 Bridge Over the Broad River project in Richland County, South Carolina. These investigations entailed background research and intensive archaeological survey. We identified no archaeological resources within the archaeological Area of Project Effect (APE). The project crosses over the Columbia Canal, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). At the time of this report, it is unknown if the new Broad River Bridge will have an adverse effect on the Columbia Canal. Certain considerations should be taken during the design of the bridge, including pier placement, bridge height, and appearance, in order to minimize or negate potential adverse effects to the Columbia Canal. These issues are directly addressed in the historical survey report for the project. We identified no archaeological sites or isolated finds within the archaeological APE. Therefore, construction of the project as currently designed will not affect any archaeological resources. Further management of the proposed Replacement of the US 176 Bridge Over the Broad River project as currently designed with regard to archaeological resources is not warranted."

2005年5月，布洛金顿联合公司（Brockington and Associates, Inc.）针对南卡罗来纳州里奇兰县的美国176号公路跨布罗德河桥梁替换拟建项目，开展了考古调查工作。本次调查包含背景资料研究与密集型考古勘探。经排查，项目影响考古区（Archaeological Area of Project Effect, APE）内未发现任何考古资源。该项目途经列入《国家历史名胜名录》（National Register of Historic Places, NRHP）的哥伦比亚运河。在本报告编制之时，尚无法确定新建布罗德河大桥是否会对哥伦比亚运河产生不利影响。为尽可能降低乃至消除对哥伦比亚运河的潜在不利影响，桥梁设计阶段需考量多项关键因素，包括桥墩布设位置、桥梁高度与外观造型。上述相关问题已在本项目的历史考古调查报告中得到全面阐述。我们再次确认，项目影响考古区内未发现任何考古遗址或孤立出土遗存。因此，按当前设计方案推进本项目建设，不会对任何考古资源造成影响。针对本项目当前设计方案的考古资源相关后续管理工作并无必要。
