In February 1998, St. Louis District personnel visited the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson, Mississippi, to research archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on federally owned or supported Mississippi Army National Guard (MSARNG) facilities in the state. The work was conducted by St. Louis District personnel to provide the baseline data necessary to locate and assess archaeological collections from the investigated MSARNG facilities, as well as to provide MSARNG with background information regarding the potential cultural affiliation of their cultural resources. This document conveys the results of the research conducted to assist MSARNG with the identification of potentially culturally affiliated Native American groups and provides a point of contact list for these groups. In total, 18 federally recognized Native American tribes were identified as representing seven Native American groups that may have cultural affiliation to MSARNG cultural resources. The Choctaw once controlled the land that is currently occupied by the two federally owned or supported MSARNG facilities, Camp McCain and Camp Shelby. However, a number of other Native American groups inhabited and/or ranged within areas of the present state of Mississippi, including the Chickasaw, Natchez, Tunica-Biloxi, and Alabama and Coushatta. In addition, individuals from the aforementioned tribes emigrated to and merged with a number of Native groups such as the Creek, Cherokee, and Seminole. These groups, although geographically marginal to Mississippi, influenced the Native history of the area, and may also claim cultural affiliation with MSARNG collections. The extent, nature, and location of archaeological collections recovered from work conducted on the MSARNG facilities will be determined in the second phase of this project, to be completed during Fiscal Year 1999.
