The first of these volumes consists of copies of various documents concerned with quarantine matters. The documents include Acts, quarantine regulations, proclamations concerning quarantine of ships arriving from infected ports, copies of opinions of the Crown Solicitor on quarantine matters, instructions to Health Officers, and a copy of the International Sanitary Convention signed at Venice in March 1897 together with a copy of a memorandum by J. Ashburton Thompson, President of the Board, explaining the unsuitability of the convention system for Australian conditions and the resolution on which the Board agreed, accepting the reasons in the memorandum and directing that the Government "be advised that to adhere to the Convention would be inexpedient".The second volume is indexed and contains similar documents to the first. Beginning about 1900 it covers a wider range of matters, "Quarantine" meaning ship quarantine in the first volume and including the wider meaning of isolation of persons, buildings and areas in the second, the two additional factors being the Plague epidemic of 1900 and the effect of Federation on quarantine questions.(5/5853-54). 2 vols.NoteThis description is extracted from the Concise Guide to the State Archives of New South Wales. 3rd edition, 2000.
