HISTOLOGICAL STUDIES OF THE EFFECT OF EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION ON THE LIVER OF WISTAR RATS
The excessive consumption of alcohol poses a significant public health concern due to its detrimental effects on individual well-being, particularly on the liver. Chronic ethanol ingestion leads to morphological and functional alterations in the liver, affecting hepatic cells, thus impairing it's functions. In this study, we carefully investigated the impact of chronic ethanol consumption on liver histological morphology.Animals were divided into 4 groups in number of 5 (n=5), the control (water), group 2 1ml of 17% alcohol (10g/kg/b.w. p.o), group 3 were given 3mls of 17% alcohol, and group 4 were given 5mls of 17% alcohol, with 5 animals in each. Over 30 days, ethanol consumption was monitored ad libitum. Results revealed chronic inflammatory pattern, deterioration of hepatic structures, mild interstitial congestion and inflammation. This study underscores the importance of understanding the pathological effects of alcohol on the liver and emphasizes the need for interventions to mitigate its impact on public health.
