An intercropping system is based on the interplay between cereals and legumes, and represents a promising way to promote sustainable agriculture. It is influenced by the interaction between roots and the soil microbial communities, including also arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). In this context a fundamental question might be if different plant genotypes can differently interact with microorganisms. To address this issue, a 2-year field study was carried out, verifying the effects of intercropping and mycorrhizal inoculation on two varieties of durum wheat and a variety of lentil in different combinations on agronomic and grain features, as well on microbial communities of soil, rhizosphere and roots.
