Basic dataset of national identity research through the lens of Xi Jinping's Governance of China I.

This dataset contains 277 manually annotated concepts and expressions extracted from 18 speeches by Xi Jinping, as published in the first volume of The Governance of China (《习近平谈治国理政》), covering 2012–2014. It was compiled to support a discourse-analytical study of Chinese national identity, with the aim of identifying the central political narratives through which that identity is constructed. Each row records one extracted expression with its source context and analytical annotations. The file is provided in Orange-compatible .xlsx and .csv formats for data mining and visualization (theme frequency, sentiment trends, co-occurrence, clustering). Column structure (codebook): chinese_term — the original Chinese expression pinyin — romanized transcription hungarian_meaning — Hungarian gloss of the term context_chinese — the full source sentence (Chinese) theme — narrative theme tag(s) in Chinese, comma-separated sentiment — 1 (positive), 0 (neutral), −1 (negative) key_expression — 1 if treated as a key concept, 0 otherwise source — source speech (title and date) comment_hungarian — optional annotation note (Hungarian) source_year — 2012, 2013, or 2014 Distribution: by year, 2012 (63), 2013 (156), 2014 (58); by sentiment, positive (158), neutral (91), negative (28); 109 entries are flagged as key expressions. The 20 narrative theme tags include the Chinese Dream (实现中国梦, 72), Foreign Policy (外交, 70), Development (发展, 68), National Rejuvenation (伟大复兴, 58), Peace (和平, 49), and Nation/Ethnicity (民族, 40). Note on language: column headers are in English, but the theme values are in Chinese and the hungarian_meaning and comment_hungarian fields are in Hungarian, reflecting the dataset's origin in a Hungarian-language PhD dissertation. Sentiment and theme values were manually coded by the uploader aligning with the research plan. Annotations reflect the coder's interpretation and are intended for research use. The dataset can be reused independently for studies of Chinese political discourse, nationalism, and narrative identity.
