Regional Differences of Hierarchical Trust between North and South China

Study 1 involved the analysis of questionnaire survey data collected from a nationally representative sample of adults. It compared the hierarchical trust propensity of individuals from northern and southern regions during social interactions, and preliminarily explored the north-south differences in Chinese people's hierarchical trust propensity. Study 1 mainly focused on relational distinction-based hierarchical trust. Therefore, in the subsequent micro-level experiments, we refined and manipulated the distinction between in-group and out-group members. Given the significant ecological and cultural differences between Fujian Province and Shaanxi Province, which represent the southern and northern regions to a certain extent, Study 2 selected college students from these two provinces for behavioral experiments. Using the trust game experiment, Study 2 extended the attitude measurement results of Study 1 to the behavioral level, and conducted a preliminary investigation of micro-level factors that could explain the north-south differences. Building on Study 2, Study 3 further examined the role of reciprocal expectations in the north-south differences by manipulating reciprocal expectations using the common and one-sided knowledge paradigms.
