Radar derived surface currents, based in linear waves dispersion relation properties. The retrieved currents are based on the frequency shifts observed by the radar within the wave field observations.A Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon marine X-band radar was installed in RV Meteorfrom August 10th 2024 to March 17th 2025. An external GPS was also installed to geolocate the radar backscatter-Intensity data. The radar was equipped with a 7.5' (2.3 m) wide antenna with vertical polarization in transmit and receive (VV) and operated in short pulse mode with a pulse duration of 50 to 70 ns, a pulse repetition frequency of 2000 Hz, and a nominal transmitted peak power of 12 kW. These settings yield a nominal resolution at the -3 dB level of 7.5 to 10.5 m and about 1° in range and azimuth, respectively. The recieved signal was digitized at 40 MHz with 1504 sampled range cells yielding a spatial sampling distance of 3.75 m, and a maximum range of roughly 5640 km. The radar was scheduled to continuously record data in the standard scanning mode, that is at an antenna rotation period of roughly 2 seconds. The radar was operated as needed, based on the Meteor crew's requirements. During the first two weeks, some data was lost due to hard drive storage failures. That issue was resolved, and the remaining data gaps are due to intentional shutdowns requested by the crew.
