This study allows quantitative assessment of soil microbial community, reveals the presence of viable but non-culturable novel hydrocarbon degrading bacteria and overcome the limitation imposed by cultivation. A hydrocarbon-contaminated soil; dark, moistened with oil sampled from a mechanic workshop in Lagos, Nigeria. the coordinates of the sampling point is latitude 6° 79' N, longitude 3° 31' E.
