In order to investigate the genotypes and ecological interactions present in denitrifying communities along an environmental gradient in pH, soils were sampled from multiple locations, homogenized, and used to inoculate defined medium with nitrate supplied as the sole electron acceptor. Cultures were incubated under anaerobic conditions and then serially propagated for 12 cycles of 72 h each. DNA was extracted from endpoint cultures and sequenced using an Illumina NextSeq 550 (2x150 paired end reads). The raw sequencing reads from this experiment are deposited on the SRA.
