The aim of this project was to investigate how the nervous system modulates the common synaptic inputs to spinal motor neurons during a functionally relevant grip (grasping) compared to less functionally relevant hand tasks. Participants performed three different tasks: simultaneous four-finger flexion without thumb involvement (four-finger flexion), thumb flexion, and simultaneous flexion of both fingers and thumb (grasping). Motor units were decomposed from high-density surface electromyograms detected from the extrinsic finger flexor muscles using this algorithm and tracked across tasks. Motor unit discharge rate and common synaptic oscillations across the delta, alpha, and beta bands were calculated and compared between tasks. For further details, please refer to the READ ME file.
