VPRS 6906 Inwards Correspondence, Colonial Secretary [1851 - 1855] and Chief Secretary [1855 - 1858]

This is an artificial series consisting of two categories of correspondence. The first is correspondence received by the Surveyor-General's Department and referred to the Colonial or Chief Secretary for comment or guidance. These pieces of correspondence may have a minute written across them by the Secretary. Correspondence registration numbers may be those of the Surveyor - General's correspondence registration system or that of the Colonial or Chief Secretary. The second category of correspondence is that received directly by the Colonial or Chief Secretary and immediately referred onwards as coming under the responsibility of the Surveyor - General or the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands. Correspondence may be stamped as being Orders-in-Council Land (see VPRS 6905) or as Land Victoria. A number of pieces of correspondence (presumably those referred) are stamped as "To be Returned'.Correspondence deals with matters relating to employment and conditions of employment for survey personnel and survey reports. Other correspondence deals with applications for the purchase of land under pre-emptive right and of land where the deposit had been forfeited after auction as well as requests for the survey and sale of specific areas of land. Also included are requests for deeds and applications for leases as well as reports and requests from the Commissioner of Crown lands.Series where this correspondence might be registered include VPRS 2879 Register of Inward Correspondence II [Land Branch] or VPRS 1186 Registers of Inward Correspondence I. Another series which might record this correspondence is VPRS 1410 Index to Inward Correspondence [Land Branch].
