Intraspinal as well as intramuscular administrations of brain- or glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF, GDNF) have been shown to protect neural tissue and promote functional recovery after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). In contrast to these local invasive therapies, systemic approaches did not show similar effects. Interestingly, a diet rich in antioxidants may stimulate the endogenous production of neurotrophic factors (NFs). Therefore, our study investigated how carnosine, a natural antioxidant commonly used as a supplement by many athletes, affects functional recovery, NF production, and cellular responses six weeks after SCI.

脑源性神经营养因子(brain-derived neurotrophic factor, BDNF)与胶质细胞源性神经营养因子(glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, GDNF)的脊髓内及肌内给药方式,已被证实可在创伤性脊髓损伤(SCI)后保护神经组织并促进功能恢复。与这类有创局部治疗方案不同,全身给药途径并未展现出同等疗效。值得关注的是,富含抗氧化剂的膳食可刺激神经营养因子(neurotrophic factors, NFs)的内源性生成。因此,本研究探讨了肌肽——一种被众多运动员广泛用作补充剂的天然抗氧化剂——对创伤性脊髓损伤六周后功能恢复、神经营养因子生成及细胞应答的影响。
