Stronger-SAFE is a five-year project funded by the Wellcome Trust that will increase our understanding of how trachoma is transmitted, leading to the development and testing of new, more effective interventions and treatment approaches The behaviour-microbiology studies sought to inform the target behaviour we should promote during our face washing intervention. In order to determine how best to promote face washing with soap to maximise interruption of Chlamydia trachomatis transmission, we assessed how effectively ocular and nasal discharge were removed from children's faces following washing with water or with water and soap. We also studied how long it took for ocular and nasal discharge to return to children's faces after washing. The dataset can be found here. The results of this pilot study can be found in our AJTMH paper (Czerniewska et al.) entitled "Comparison of face washing and face wiping methods for trachoma control: a pilot study".
